boru.chat

gossip messages over broadcast trees

boru-chat is a peer-to-peer chat application built on iroh, a QUIC-based networking library. Messages are broadcast over gossip trees using PlumTree and HyParView protocols — no central server, no single point of failure.

It supports room-based chat with automatic peer discovery, offline direct messaging with encrypted inbox delivery, file sharing with content-addressed transfers and explicit access authorisation, and friend management with signed contact negotiation. All persistent data lives in SQLite with managed schema migrations.

Why "boru"? The project is named after Brian Boru (Brian Bóruma mac Cennétig, c. 941–1014), the High King of Ireland who unified the island's fractured kingdoms. boru-chat likewise aims to unite peers into a coherent network — turning isolated nodes into a single connected chat fabric, no central authority required.
