boru is a chat app built on a simple belief: the companies and institutions controlling today's internet and messaging systems should not be trusted with our private conversations.

Centralised messaging services place one company between you and everyone you speak to. That company controls the infrastructure, stores the data, sets the rules, and can monitor, restrict, analyse, monetise, or surrender access to your communications. Even when messages are encrypted, users are still expected to trust a central authority with their accounts, identities, metadata, contacts, and access to the network.

boru removes that central point of control.

You connect directly with other users, join shared rooms, and exchange messages across a peer-to-peer network. The system is designed around the people taking part in the conversation - not a corporation sitting in the middle.

Use rooms for group conversations, send direct messages even when a contact is temporarily offline, and share files only with explicit permission. Direct messages use encrypted inbox delivery. Files are transferred by content address and are made available only when you authorise access.

Your conversations belong to you. Your files remain under your control. Your data stays on your own devices.

No central messaging server. No company watching from the middle. No platform owner deciding who may communicate.

Just people communicating directly, on a network they control.

Why "boru"? The project is named after Brian Boru (Brian Bóruma mac Cennétig, c. 941-1014), the High King of Ireland. Brian Boru is a fitting namesake because he is remembered for bringing many Irish kingdoms together under a shared cause. boru applies that idea to communication: people can meet and exchange messages as peers, without relying on one central authority to connect everyone.
